They shout to the point of exhaustion. They detach themselves from originator and source. They come from the dead who sing a duet with the living. The human sounds like a machine, Barbie like Ken, the on-board computer like a gentle friend. Voices staged and imagined by artists not only make audible the strange in the familiar, the monstrous in the everyday; they also repeatedly pose the question: who is actually speaking? - The feature was created in connection with the exhibition His Master's Voice: On Voice and Language at Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) Dortmund.
Inke Arns, *1968 in Duisdorf/Bonn, curator and author, is artistic director of the Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) in Dortmund. She lives in Berlin and Dortmund.
