Christopher DeLaurenti: Favorite Intermissions

Dortmunder U | HMKV at Lautsprecher | Level 4

From Saturday, December 1st, 2012, HMKV presents the sound art piece Favorite Intermissions: Music Before and Between Beethoven, Stravinsky, Holst by Christopher DeLaurenti at Lautsprecher, a dedicated space for sound art. The work is part of HMKV's current exhibiton Sounds Like Silence and is accessible until 31 December 2012 at Lautsprecher.

During intermissions at classical concerts, the musicians often return to the stage. Alone or with others, clarinetists, trumpeters, violinists, and other instruments rehearse difficult passages from the upcoming part of the program. In the course of his research on orchestras around the world, Christopher DeLaurenti secretly recorded these moments. Listeners might wonder why a visual artist should be interested in the cacophony of practicing musicians. DeLaurenti aims to reveal and exhibit unexpected, often overlooked, and hidden musical structures which are closely intertwined with our daily experience of the world. By collecting sounds in a world which, in reference to Cage, he sees as one big symphony, the artist undermines the common understanding of music as a composition comprising notes, melody, and traditional instruments.
