OVERGAMES
Germany 2015
Director: Lutz Dammbeck
164 min
Dolby 5.1.
FSK free from 12 years
Overgames is a massive piece of cinema to deal with: more than two and a half hours of history and theory covering diverse disciplines ranging from anthropology and ethnography via economy and psychology to political science, while touching on subjects as seemingly unrelated as TV game shows, West Germany’s re-education after WWII (chiefly by the US), psychodrama, racism, brain research, the workings of memory, and many more.
And yet, it is easy to follow Lutz Dammbeck through the maze of theories and ideas he build: The playfully multi-layered and detour-happy narrative of Overgames is very thoroughly and rigorously constructed, systematic, transparent, and finally most illuminating in its arguments. Befitting a masterpiece which ends on a question one wouldn’t have expected at the outset: That of the soul – the one variable that remains a factor X for science, and whose presence can only be noticed as a malfunction. Humans never function perfectly, for the better or the worse.
