The political joke as a barometer of public opinion: Lew Hohmann’s documentary DDR-Witze und der BND (GDR Jokes and the BND) deals with a secret operation by the German Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst/BND). In 1977 West German Agents were to record and analyse East German jokes. This rather peculiar and top secret undertaking reveals a lot about the country’s morale.
