Film screening : “Symbiotic Earth”

HMKV at the Dortmunder U | Cinema, ground floor

On the occasion of the exhibition We grow, grow and grow, we're gonna be alright and this is our show by Jana Kerima Stolzer & Lex Rütten (running time: 11 March – 30 July 2023), the HMKV offers the film screening Symbiotic Earth as part of the event series of the Dortmunder U "Kleiner Freitag".

In the documentary Symbiotic Earth (USA, 2017, approx. 147 min.), director John Feldman follows Lynn Margulis, a U.S. evolutionary theorist and biologist who pushed radically innovative thoughts on evolutionary theory in the 1960s: she presented symbiosis, i.e. the coexistence of living beings of different species for mutual benefit, as a key element of evolution.

In addition to Lynn Margulis, Feldmann features other pioneering scientists to explore how climate change and capitalism might be addressed through sustainable and symbiotic ways of living.

In the exhibition by Jana Kerima Stolzer and Lex Rütten, technology, ecology and science fiction, among other things in the Ruhr region, meet in videos, installations and virtual reality. For the film evening, curator and HMKV director Inke Arns will be joined by the two artists to welcome the audience and briefly talk about how the documentary relates to their artistic work.
