HMKV Twitter Guide
Dortmunder U | Level 3
Although there are many different types of audio guides, they are often perceived as verbose and complicated by their users. This observation has prompted the Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) to present the world’s first experimental Twitter Guide for the exhibition ‘The Mechanical Corps. On the Trail of Jules Verne’ .
The aim: Stimulating visitors’ imagination
When developing the Twitter Guide, the HMKV wanted to convey the fantastical worlds of Jules Verne to visitors of the exhibition by providing new impulses, revealing new connections and stimulating their imagination through the eyes of external actors. In other words, visitors would be listening to the stories of other people rather than a single, authorised speaker.
The process: Two Herbergsmütter, eight participants and an artists’ speed dating
On 10 April 2015 eight art-loving Twitter users, together with the HMKV team as well as Anke von Heyl and Ute Vogel from the legendary Herbergsmütter Office for Creative Coaching and Cultural Events, started a fascinating journey which brings to life the world of Jules Verne through a collection of sophisticated mechanical constructions, Victorian-inspired costumes, arcane technical drawings and eccentric inventions.
The result: A timely tool to reach out to audiences
The result of this process is a new, distinctly personal perspective on the artworks in less than 140 characters, as well as a new approach towards artistic mediation in a context where museums must keep pace with people’s changing media habits.
The facts: Two versions, two guided tours and one participative approach
