Lecture & Talk: Stan Douglas
Cinema at the Dortmunder U | Level 0
Stan Douglas, Luanda-Kinshasa, 2013, Videostill, Courtesy of the artist, Victoria Miro and David Zwirner
Talk with Iris Dressler & Hans D. Christ (curators of the exhibition Stan Douglas. Past Imperfect. Works 1986 - 2007 (2007) & Directors of the Württembergischer Kunstverein (WKV) Stuttgart). Moderation: Dr Inke Arns (HMKV).
Like almost no other artist, Stan Douglas (*1960 in Vancouver) knows how to expand the experiential spaces of cinema and museum both sensually and intellectually. At the centre of almost all of his works is an intensive examination of a specific location, the history of which he reflects with the help of literary, cinematic or musical references. Douglas has already been represented three times at the documenta and the Venice Biennale and has presented his work in numerous solo exhibitions worldwide. His work Luanda-Kinshasa from 2013 can be seen in the current HMKV exhibition Holding Pattern - Warteschleifen und andere Loops. In the work, Douglas has assembled sequences shot with a slowly circling camera into a seamless six-hour loop, creating a hypnotic ‘document’ of an imaginary 1970s jam session in New York's legendary Columbia 30th Street Studio.
In the lecture & talk, the directors of the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart and founders of the HMKV Iris Dressler & Hans D. Christ will speak with HMKV director Dr Inke Arns about the work of the Canadian artist. Admission is free, registration is not necessary.
