Artist Talk (Niklas Goldbach in conversation with Inke Arns) followed by a lecture performance of Into The Paradise Machine in the cinema of the Dortmunder U (ground floor), as part of Kleinen Freitag and the HMKV exhibition Niklas Goldbach: The Paradise Machine (March 16, 2024 – August 11, 2024).

Dr. Inke Arns, curator of the exhibition and director of the HMKV, discusses with Niklas Goldbach the current exhibition, the background and his artistic approach. Afterwards, Niklas Goldbach will give a lecture performance on his video work Into The Paradise Machine.

In the 1970s, bungalow complexes were built in the Netherlands for family holidays: Center Parcs were a fusion of Dutch modernist ideals and Catholic moral conservatism. Into The Paradise Machine was filmed in several Center Parcs in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. The accompanying performance lecture in form of a live “Voice Over” contrasts the film with impressions from the diary of the Dutch architect Jaap Bakema, who was with his architecture firm Van den Broek and Bakema responsible for the design of the bungalow complexes. Written during his time as a prisoner in a German deportation camp Royallieu-Compiegne in the north of France in 1943, the diary reveals his survial and coping strategies and allows insights in his views on the philosphy of nature, architecture and society.
